How this works
- Scale feet is the prototype dimension after compression: what the finished model represents on the layout.
- Model inches is that same figure divided by the scale ratio: what you actually cut, print, or measure at the bench. The smaller figure underneath rounds to the nearest 1/64″, which is about as fine as a scale rule really reads.
- The two unit switches are independent on purpose. Plenty of modelers read the prototype in feet and inches but still cut to millimeters at the bench. At HO, one prototype foot is 3.5 mm and one prototype meter is 11.5 mm.
- Compression only shrinks the dimensions you tick. A 200′ grain elevator with 40% off its length still reads as a grain elevator; the same cut off its height does not.
